On June 6, 2014, cyclists from across Canada will begin a 10 day journey 70 years after D-Day. Starting in Normandy, the Canada Battlefield Ride will visit historic war memorials and riders will pay their respects. Wounded Warriors Canada, the foundation behind the ride, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping former soldiers and their families with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “Our hope is that we can have everyday Canadians, coast to coast to coast, to be a part of the ride,” said Scott Maxwell, executive director of the Wounded Warriors Foundation.

The ride’s purpose is multifaceted. The location speaks to those who fought in the Second World War. In addition to paying respects, Wounded Warriors Canada is aiming to raise funds for their foundation while also generating awareness of the impacts of the PTSD that many soldiers experience. The ride is also meant to be a tribute to the 158 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan. “Not too many know that number. We are always sure to honour all of the fallen,” said Maxwell. “We also want Canadians to know how our foundation is helping the living, too.”

Since its founding in 2006, Wounded Warriors helps soldiers following their active services. Wounded Warriors’ primary focus is to improve the mental health of soldiers who are transitioning back to civilian life. Funds raised from the ride will be donated to the expansion the PTSD animal-assisted therapy programs: the Can Praxis Equine Therapy and MSAR’s Courageous Companion Service Dog Program. “Our fastest growing area is with animal-assisted therapy for those suffering or impacted by PTSD,” said Maxwell.

The inspiration for the Battlefield Ride came from the United Kingdom’s equivalent of Wounded Warriors, Help for Heroes, which organizes a battlefield ride from Paris to London. “We sent over a small team the past two years to participate in the ride,” said Maxwell. “Many more wanted to join, so we decided to start our own ride.” The 10-day event will undoubtedly be a challenge. The ride will be fully supported and all are welcome, non-cyclists included.

Registration for the 2014 Battlefield Bike ride will officially open at 10 a.m. Sept. 5 at a special event held at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
