Event / Course Preview
Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria is a supported mass-participation cycling event in Victoria, British Columbia. Experience one of the seven different routes offered, with distances ranging from 14 km to 160 km, covering a carefully planned selection of some of the same roads Ryder trained on leading to his 2012 Giro d’Italia victory.
Starting from the beautiful inner harbour of Victoria at the BC Legislative Buildings, riders cruise through downtown on closed roads out towards the rolling hills of Metchosin. But first, the route turns down towards Esquimalt Lagoon, where riders pass between Hatley Castle, the lagoon and the Pacific Ocean.
From the lagoon, riders climb back up towards Metchosin, and the quiet hills surrounding Victoria. This year, the route includes an extended section along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail as it passes by Matheson Lake. An old rail way line turned into a multi-use path provides a break from hills and the tarmac, sending riders through a tunnel of lush greenery as the route turns back towards town.
Next, the Tour de Victoria climbs up into Victoria’s Highlands. Winding climbs and descents are sure to challenge riders of all levels, as the route passes over local favourites, including Munn Rd, Prospect Lake and Ross Durrance Rd. towards Willis Point.
Emerging from the hills, riders work back towards the water. The route hugs close to the ocean as it winds all the way back to downtown Victoria, and the finish line in front of the Legislature.
Along with stunning views and incredible roads, there’s also six aid stations along the route to make sure you have all the fuel you need to get back to the finish line feeling strong.
