Five medals for Canada on first day of Rio 2016 Paralympic road cycling
A gold, a silver and three bronze medals in the time trials
On Wednesday, Cranbrook, BC’s Tristen Chernove added a Rio 2016 Paralympic gold medal to his silver in the track 3,000-metre individual pursuit and bronze in C1-2-3 “kilo” as the racing moved outdoors. Canadians also garnered a silver and three bronzes in a day of time trials.
Chernove beat Ireland’s Colin Lynch for the gold, rolling the 20-km at 27:43.16 in the C2 time trail. “C” denotes a regular bicycle. The head winds were strong on the Pontal course.
The C1 competition saw the Germany favourite Michael Teuber prevail with Canadian Ross Wilson +53.36 for silver. Wilson also nabbed a medal on the track, a silver in the C1 3000m individual pursuit.
In the handcycle races, Victoriaville, QC’s Charles Moreau powered the 20-km in 29:26.91 for the bronze.

Calgarian Michael Sametz was in the afternoon’s C3 race where he took bronze, posting 39:41.28 over 30-km.
In the tricycle category Shelley Gautier captured Canada’s third bronze of the day in the T1-2, while her compatriot Eve-Marie Croteau was 6th. The gold medalist was UCI World and Paralympic Champion Carol Cooke (Australia).

In the women’s C4, Marie-Claude Molnar took fifth. Robbi Weldon came 7th and Shawna Ryan 13th in the women’s Tandem B time trial. Nicole Clermont rolled to 8th in the women’s C5, while Daniel Chalifour placed 15th in the men’s B.
