Bike Check: Peter Disera’s BCBR Pivot Mach 4SL

Peter Disera rolled up to the 2023 BC Bike Race as the defending champion but on a brand new bike. Since joining the Pivot Cycles-OTE team, he’s one of the first riders that gets to race the third generation of Pivot’s Mach 4SL cross country race bike.

BC Bike Race is a little different than Disera’s usual World Cup fare, which requires some minor adjustments to the bike. Like carrying a full pump and tool, since the distance between Shimano neutral support tents could be a long walk.

The third version of the Mach 4SL is quite similar to the outgoing generation, though it does shave a couple hundred grams off of the frame weight. Otherwise, it still uses the DW-link suspension layout. It comes in two versions, a World Cup and a … non-World Cup. The WC version can run 93mm or 103mm rear wheel travel with 100mm or 120mm forks. The Disera’s bikes switch between 106mm or 115mm, with Peter opting for the 115mm travel option at BCBR

More labels. A nice touch and - again - probably necessary when both Disera brothers are travelling with near-identical equipment.

The 34 Step Cast seems to be the go-to for most Fox racers, especially on tough courses like the BCBR where the added stiffness is appreciated

Full lockout for the fork and shock, because it's still and XC race bike.

Suspension lockout and dropper post levers make a crowded cockpit, but Fox and Wolftooth play well together to keep the bars tidy.

BCBR courses take riders far away from any technical support, so a full OneUp pump/tool combo is worth the extra weight.

Disera is also running a set of Dark 6 prototype wheels from ENVE. There are a few big changes to the long-standing ENVE rim profile on the yet-to-be-released rim. There’s a very different rim shape, with a taller center and lower-profile outer edges. More brands are experimenting with different rim shapes and it looks like ENVE is joining the fray. The “handmade-in-the-USA” carbon fibre hoops are apparently designed specifically to be run without inserts. So, while many top pros were running some sort of insert, Disera had nothing but sealant between tire and rim on Vancouver Island.

The set up held air and went fast, with Disera earning some stage wins and second overall at the 2023 BC Bike Race.
