Cory Wallace is steadily inching his way up the podium standings at the 2023 Breck Epic in Colorado. The Jasper, Alta. endurance mountain biker has finished third on each of the first four stages in the six-day XC stage race. With a rotating cast in front of him, that consistency sees the Canuck move up to second in the overall standings.

Only EF’s Lachlan Morton remains in front of Wallace, with a little over 10 minutes separating the two after more than twelve hours of racing in the high-elevation epic. Australia’s Tasman Nankervis is closing in on third place, though, and moving up the ranks through some solid mid-race efforts including a stage win.

Here is Cory Wallace’s mid-race report from Colorado:

The first 3 stages are in the bank here at Breck Epic and it has been three bronzes. Lachlan Morton won the first two stages, then Jeremiah Bishop won the Queen stage over French Pass. A different rider has been in 2nd each of the days as the top 10 has some fast legs in it this year. Consistency is paying off and I’m sitting 2nd overall in GC, 7:18 down from Lachlan in the lead. We both used Leadville 100 as an opener the day before Breck, so far it seems to be paying off.

Every stage has been a beauty as the Colorado singletrack is in prime condition after some moisture over the weekend. We’ve been soaking up the sunny weather which we were especially grateful for today going up and over the continental divide twice, crossing above 12 000 ft where there isn’t alot of oxygen available! The training this year was a bit different before this Colorado doubleheader spending the time at home in the Canadian Rockies in Jasper and Mcbride. Using a couple different training techniques including running up 3000 meter mountains seems to be paying off as the engine is firing good.

3 stages to go including the epic stage 5 over Wheelers Pass where we will head back above 12 000 ft for some heavenly alpine singletrack which will feel like hell with the lack of O2!

Over and out from Breckenridge Colorado.”

Wallace isn’t the only Canuck having a good – and fast – time at the Breck Epic. Sonya Looney currently sits sixth overall in the pro women’s race. She’s chasing race leaders Erin Huck, Kaysee Armstrong and Evelyn Dong.

On the men’s side, Geoff Kabush is sitting just inside the top-10 and looking to move through the ranks via steady pacing in the latter half of the week.
