Matt Walker and Tracey Hannah win elite races in Slovenia

Canadians are off to a fast start in their European downhill campaign, landing a podium and a top-10 at the first iXS European Downhill Cup in Slovenia on Sunday.

Ethan Shandro let the Canadian charge, finishing second in the stacked junior men’s field. Mark Wallace got his season off to a solid start, rolling into ninth in the pro men’s race.

Matt Walker took top honours in the men’s pro race, followed by Danny Hart and Charlie Harrison. Mark Wallace was the top Canadian in the men’s event, taking ninth. Canadian national champion Magnus Manson followed in 19th.

Tracey Hannah took the win in the pro women’s race by nearly four seconds. Germany’s Nina Hoffmann followed in second, and Monika Hrastnik third, racing at home in Slovenia.

Ethan Shandro continued his excellent start to his first junior season with a second place behind France’s Thibaut Daprela. Shandro already has an early season win in North America from the US Pro GRT at Windrock Bike Park in Tennessee. The Canadian’s winning time there would have put him in fifth in the pro men’s race there, setting expectations high for his debut season on the international circuit.

The was held in Maribor, Slovenia, where the first World Cup of the season is set to start in less than a weeks time. With the two events sharing many parts of the same track, many of the biggest names in downhill were on the startlist for this opportunity to get an extra race on the Maribor course.

Ian Milley was the next Canadian behind Shandro, landing in 15th in Maribor.
