Transition Bikes rarely takes itself too seriously and its latest bike launch, for the highly anticipated carbon version of its Smuggler platform, is no different. You might think if there was ever a time to put on a straight face and talk plain, releasing a high end version of the popular short travel 29” party bike might be it. After all, they say the carbon version that was just released has been four years in the making. Then again, it’s also another chance to have fun, ride fast, and take an easy jab at internet trolls and comment section critics, so why get serious now?

Like the fine humans behind the bikes, Transition’s Smuggler platform clearly targets fun. The Bellingham company narrows this down a little, saying the Smuggler is a versatile short travel, big wheel bike that’s ideal for any ride, whether that’s long backcountry days or quick lunch hour shreds. Helping the Smuggler along this path towards good times is a balance of 140 mm front and 120 mm rear suspension, which the company claims is enough to have all the fun you want, where you want to, but short enough to enjoy getting there too.

Features on the new look Smuggler include a full carbon frame, their Speed Balanced Geometry with reduced fork offset, Giddy Up 2.0H suspension, Boost dropout spacing, metric shock spacing, a threaded bottom bracket and the all important space for a water bottle in the front triangle. The carbon Smuggler comes in at 2.95 kg for frame, shock and hardware, and will be available in for Spring 2018.
