Fincham finishes 17th: World Cup U23 results from Nové Město na Moravě

Canadians continue working their way up through the field during European campaign

Between Friday’s Elite XCC and Sunday’s Elite Men’s and Women’s XCO race, Nové Město na Moravě was home to two U23 races that were, by all accounts fantastic races. A large contingent of Canada’s rising generation of cross country talent were in the Czech Republic to test themselves against their international peers, with Sean Fincham (Forward Racing / Team Canada) emerging as the top U23 man and Juliette Tetreault (Equipe du Quebec) the top woman of the Canadian contingent.

Red Bull TV and the UCI still don’t televise the U23 race, though it is hard to complain when they broadcast the full XCO and XCC races online for free. It’s too bad they don’t, though, as the young Canadian racers had some fantastic performances. Squamish’s Sean Fincham continued his steady march up the U23 rankings, finishing 17th in Nové Město after finishing 21st in Albstadt, Germany last week. Not far behind were Marc-Andre Fortier (Pivot-OTE) in 31st and Norco Factory Racing’s Quinton Disera in 35th.

Gunnar Holmgren and Brody Sanderson continued to show their ability to work up through the massive U23 Men’s field, finishing 55th and 73rd, which are fantastic results for the two riders in their first year in the U23 category. Pivot-OTE’s Felix Belhumeur and Raphael Auclair rounded out the Canadian Men’s results with 86th and 95th in Nové Město.

For the Women, it was Juliette Tetreault who pushed the furthest forward in the field, finishing 29th behind the sprint finish between Sina Frei and Malene Degn. Nova Scotia’s Mackenzie Myatt followed next in 34th, with Anne Julie Tremblay (36th) and Laurie Arseneault (38th) following close behind.

A break in the World Cup calendar allows the young racers to return to Canada following the successful European campaign.
