Red Bull Rampage had a distinctly Canadian flavour this year. All three podium winners at the Utah freeride festival were Canadian.
Brandon Semenuk rode his way into the history books by earning his third Red Bull Rampage title. Semenuk joins another Canadian, Kurt Sorge, as the only two riders with three Rampage titles to their name.
The Canadian’s line looks like it was executed flawlessly, but some of the tricks were his first time doing them. The scale of Rampage is so huge that Semenuk says the risk of a practice run was just too big.
“There’s certain features on my run that were a lot more technical to ride so I spent a lot more time figuring out the line and speed and all of that,” Semenuk said after his winning day. “Then there are other features like the flat drop flip into the
double drop where I knew I had to do it or the crash was going to be really bad, so there was no point in practicing it because then I might not be riding in the event the next day. So I saved that for the run and a couple of other things.”
2018 Rampage winner Brett Rheeder was just a hair behind Semenuk by Friday’s end. Rheeder takes second place, as well as Best Trick Award this year.
Tom van Steenbergen wrapped up the Canuck podium sweet, taking third place.
