Canadian Cycling – Matt: Hello everyone. We’ll begin shortly with the elite/under-23 men’s race.

2:50

Canadian Cycling – Matt: Before we start, here’s a video of u-23 rider Evan McNeely:

The under-23 race is a race of Evans. Which of the following Evans is not in the under-23 men’s race? (1 PTS)

Evan McNeelyEvan Soloman

Evan WishloffEvan Carey

Evan Guthrie

2:54

Canadian Cycling – Matt: Sorry folks. Technical difficultly with the video. Check some of the trivia coming your way.

2:54

2:56

Kris Westwood: We’re almost ready to go with the Elite and U23 races at the Daryl-Evans Canadian Cyclocross championships. The men are lining up on the start line and the gun should go in five minutes.

2:57

Comment From Chris Taylor

How’s the course holding up?

2:57

Kris Westwood: The rain has eased off to a very light drizzle, but the course remains very slick. There are a few corners where there is no fast line — you just have to muddle through as well as you can.

2:58

Steve Pukesh@freshpukeshRain has just stopped. Just in time for elite men’s start #cxnationals #CanCXNats

2:58

Kris Westwood: The start stretch is about 300 m of uphill road, with a right turn over the curb and into a pair of barriers, followed by a hairpin. It should string things out pretty good.

3:00

Kris Westwood: The race is expected to be a two-man battle between 2010 and 2011 champion Chris Sheppard and 2004 and 209 champ Geoff Kabush. But 2007 and 2008 champion Mike Garrigan is also on the line alonside Aaron Schooler, who finished third the last four years in a row.

3:01

Kris Westwood: Start gun is about to go.

3:02

Canadian Cycling – Matt: There’s no denying the link between beer and cyclocross. In the Oct./Nov. 2012 issue of CCM, Geoff Kabush said, “Cyclocross racing is much more relaxed than other cycling disciplines and I think hanging out with friends and having a drink after a race comes naturally.” He also reveals his top three favourite Belgian beers. Can you name/guess them?

3:02

Kris Westwood: Hole shot for Mike Garrigan, followed into the first corner by Kabush, Sheppard and Schooler.

3:03

Kris Westwood: The elite men’s field is 36 riders. There are 14 U23 men.

3:04

Who has won the most (seven) elite men’s national CX championships? (1 PTS)

Chris SheppardMike Garrigan

Peter WedgeAndreas Hestler

Greg Reain

3:05

Kris Westwood: Evan Guthrie gets the U23 hole shot, followed by Jeremy Martin and Evan McNeely.

is the course floodlit?

3:20

Cycling Canada@CyclingCanadaMen Elite Update: Geoff Kabush leads after 1 lap. Schooler, St. John and Sheppard chasing. #canCXchamps

3:20

Kris Westwood: No floodlights, but the race should end 15 minutes before it gets dark …

3:22

Kris Westwood: Kabush has 20 seconds on Sheppard, St. John and Schooler, who just got a bike change. Watson and Cameron Jette are another 10″ back.

3:24

Kris Westwood: In the U23 race, McNeely has a solid 33″ on Guthrie and l’Esperance

Go Evan Go!!!!

3:26

Kris Westwood: Kabush opens the gap to 30″ over Sheppard and St. John, with Watson and Jette at 40″. Kabush is looking solid and railing the corners.

3:27

Comment From TimL

Go Andrew Go!!!

3:27

Comment From Guest

are the 2 chaser working together to get McNeely?

3:27

Kris Westwood: No, l’Esperance and Guthrie aren’t able to work together very well — it’s not a good course for that. Guthrie has a couple seconds on l’Esperance.

3:28

Kris Westwood: It’s started to rain again.

3:28

3:28

Comment From Guest

can we get a full list of the lead ten riders? thanks

3:29

Kris Westwood: Sorry — I don’t have access to the electronic timing. I’m doing this by eye. I’ll get what I can for top 10.

3:32

Kris Westwood: Here’s my count of the elite men’s top 10:

Kabush

St. John

Sheppard

Watson

Jette

Craig Ritchey

Schooler

Tyler Trace

Andrew Pinfold

Kevin Noiles

3:32

Kris Westwood: In the U23 race, Guthrie has opened up about 10 seconds on l’Esperance. McNeely continues to lead.

3:33

Comment From Guest

How far back are 4th, 5th, etc. in the U23?

3:33

Kris Westwood: The fields are mixed up now and I don’t have a timer on the U23 leader. But the gap to 4th is very big.

3:35

Comment From AC

Gooo Xavier Laflamme!!

3:35

Comment From Zachattack II

Thanks Kris, and…Goooo L’Espy!

3:36

Kris Westwood: McNeely leads the U23 race by 35″ over Guthrie and 45″ over l’Esperance. Switching my focus back to the elite men now …

3:36

Comment From Jack

What happened to Mike Garrigan?

3:36

Comment From Guest

Is elite race 1 hour and U23 50 mins?

3:36

Kris Westwood: Yes, elite men race 60 minutes, U23s 50 minutes.

3:38

Which of the following Belgian beers might Geoff Kabush like to enjoy after a cyclocross race? (1 PTS)

Rochefort 10Chimay Blue

Tripel KarmelietAll of the above

3:39

Kris Westwood: Kabush is in full control of the elite men’s race with 50″ over Sheppard and St. John. Jette is at 1:00, Watson is at 1:05 and fading back to Ritchey at 1:15.

3:40

Comment From Jarred Jonker

Go Mcneely !

3:40

Kris Westwood: Sheppard and St. John keep swapping places. It’s very tough to follow in the corners here because it’s so slippery, so in these conditions the best tactic can be to lead.

3:41

Kris Westwood: Sheppard has dropped St. John now — the gap is about 7 seconds. Kabush now leads by 55 seconds.

3:42

Kris Westwood: It looks like Jette is closing in on St. John for the third podium spot in the elite men’s race.

3:44

Kris Westwood: McNeely remains 35 seconds ahead of Guthrie in the U23 race. The U23s are getting the bell this lap.

3:44

Comment From Adam

allez l’esperance!! give ‘er!!

3:45

Kris Westwood: That’ll be three U23 titles for McNeely if he hangs on, and he still has another year of U23 after that!

3:45

Kris Westwood: Kabush is pulling some nice two-wheel drifts as he deals with lapped traffic.

3:46

Kris Westwood: Sheppard is now well clear of St. John, who has gained time on Ritchey. They’re all looking tired now and mistakes could play a role.

3:47

Kris Westwood: Everyone looks cold and wet and muddy, except the people in the Red Racer beer tent. Red Racer brought a woman dressed up like the lady in their logo. Google it to get an idea of what I’m talking about …

3:48

Kris Westwood: McNeely’s about half-way through his last lap and still riding strong.

3:48

Cycling Canada@CyclingCanadaMen Elite Update: Sheppard takes and increases lead over Kabush, at 44s. St-John third, Ritchey fourth. #canCXchamps

3:48

Comment From Zachattack II

Why the bell for U23 after 30 mins?

3:49

Kris Westwood: The U23s started at 3:02 — it’s been 47 minutes now.

3:49

Kris Westwood: Kabush now has 58″ on Sheppard.

3:50

3:53

Comment From Sheila Gardner

Nice job Evan McNeely I think he is only 20.

3:54

Kris Westwood: Kabush continues comfortably in front.

3:55

Kris Westwood: I’ll have to confirm with Evan whether he has 1 or 2 more years of U23. Remember, it’s your age the next year that matters for ‘cross, so his racing age here is his age on Dec. 31, 2013.

3:55
