Pacelines illegal in Toronto?

Bylaw could see fines given for failing to ride in single file

An old bylaw from pre-amalgamation Toronto could see cyclists facing fines for not riding in single file if a motion by councillor Karen Stintz’s doesn’t pass next week.

The bylaw came from the neighbouring city of Etobicoke and made it into the City of Toronto’s books later. Last year, it was enacted by city council,  but it has yet to be enforced by police. However, cyclists have received warnings from police for not riding in single file. If the bylaw is not repealed through Stintz’s motion, cyclists in a paceline could face a fine of $60.

Jared Kolb of the bike-advocacy group Cycle Toronto said the following on the bylaw on the website BlogTO:

Effectively what that law does is prohibit group riding. That has implications for road riders who are out on Lake Shore, for instance. It has implications for families on side-streets, friends out on Bloor. It’s got implications right across the board. It’s a regressive bylaw and it’s something we’re keen to see taken off the books.
