Ins and outs of a cyclist’s sponsorship

Meier Omega Nutrition

As we all know, cycling is driven by sponsorship, companies paying the big dollars to have their logos displayed across the chests of cyclists in hope of getting that perfect shot of those riders crossing finish lines with arms raised in worlds biggest events. With almost every part of our team’s supplies being provided by team sponsors, there is usually little room for athletes to use products and equipment outside of those official suppliers. There are, however, usually a few exceptions, the most common being footwear and glasses.

On Orica-GreenEdge, we have an official eyewear sponsor, so the only area we are able to go our own way is with footwear, which is really paramount as feet are so different. Being able to find a shoe that fits, so to speak, is crucial. In the world of cycling shoes, you may see pros on all sorts of shoes, some custom in fit and look, as well as some that seem non-branded. The non-branded shoe is usually something the bike sponsor of a team may not want the riders advertising in case of  a conflict. I am lucky to be working with a couple great sponsors of my own and I thought it would be great to be able to highlight these guys and give them some much deserved love.

Shoes

I started working with Bontrager last season when I was looking for a lightweight shoe that had a good fit. (My second toe is longer than the first so some shoe shoes don’t work so well for me.) I also wanted a brand that was easy to work with and responsive to feedback. They had a few very capable racing level shoes that would suit a variety of different riders. And we can’t forget the awesome green-and-yellow custom colours they made for me. I have really enjoyed being involved with the evolution of new products: over this past winter, I tested new prototypes. It gives you a great feeling of satisfaction when you feel like you had some input in the final product that is on your feet. This year they are rolling out some very slick new products that I think will make them an ever bigger player in the shoe game.

Health

For athletes, health and nutrition are the key aspects of our daily routine. I have always had a very keen interest in nutrition as a way to maximize performance. This year, I am very happy to be working with Omega Nutrition as a supplier of my fats. Omega Nutrition have many super products that focus on the healthy fats. The Vancouver company started out as a processor of flax products. It grew to include a wide range of omega 3s and other essential oils. I am very excited for this one as I really love my fats and believe they are essential to the well being of athletes as well as the general population. Check them out for yourselves and start getting in those omega 3s, if you aren’t already
