2016 Tour de France Stage 13: Dumoulin’s time trial victory gives him a brace

Quintana once more found lacking, Mollema now second

Dutchman Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) took his second 2016 Tour de France win on Friday in the 37.5-km time trial, giving him five Grand Tour stage triumphs in the last 10-months. Yellow jersey Chris Froome was runner-up on the day, putting more time into all his rivals, Nairo Quintana (Colombia/Movistar) lost a spot in the GC while Bauke Mollema took over second.

The chrono was a rolling one, with a 6.9-km, 4.9% climb right from the start in Bourg-Saint-Andéol and then a 3.3-km climb of 4.9% leading to the finish. Conditions were again windy.

It was a difficult morning for the riders with the spectre of the Nice killings hanging over the proceedings. FDJ was especially glum with the news that Thibaut Pinot abandoned the race due to bronchitis.

An early leader was Tinkoff’s Pole Macej Bodnar, who posted a time of 52:47, one that didn’t stand long before Rohan Dennis (Australia/BMC) clipped it by 51-seconds. Canadian Antoine Duchesne (Direct Energie) posted 59:03. A time that stood for a long stretch was Nelson Oliveira’s (Portugal/Movistar) at 51:46.

But Stage 9 winner Dumoulin was out on course breaking all the intermediate time checks. Winner of stages in three consecutive Grand Tours, Dumoulin began his occupation of the hot seat with 50:15.

Dumoulin’s finish ushered in the time of the top-20. Geraint Thomas (Great Britain/Sky) hauled himself a spot in the GC with a mark of 52:15. American Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) was also going well on course, as was Mollema, the Dutch rider for Trek-Segafredo looking more and more likely for a Paris podium.

At the first time check atop the first climb, Quintana was being outpaced by his teammate Alejandro Valverde. At the second time check, it was apparent that Van Garderen was also a bit slower than a teammate, Richie Porte, who has done a lot to get his Tour back on track after an unfortunate late mechanical on Stage 2.

Race leader Chris Froome was only 17-seconds off Dumoulin’s high mark at the first check. Second place Adam Yates (Great Britain/Orica-BikeExchange) was 18-seconds faster than third place Quintana at the same check.

Mollema was only 2-seconds behind Quintana at the start of the day and nine in arrears of Yates. His 52:08, fifth on the day, propelled him into second on GC, 1:47 behind Froome. Yates’ 53:16 put him 14-seconds ahead of Quintana in the third spot. Valverde lurks behind his Colombian teammate in fifth. Van Garderen turned things around on Porte, beating his teammate by 18-seconds, and is 6th to Porte’s 8th. Dan Martin (Ireland/Etixx-QuickStep) continues to fall and is now 9th.

Instead of podium ceremonies, the race held a memorial for the Nice victims.

Saturday is one for the sprinters, with a ripply 208.5-km parcours that will draw a small breakaway.
