Another silver for the Canadian women’s team pursuit squad

After a gold and two silvers in three 2013-2014 UCI World Cup track cycling events earned it the World Cup victory, Canada’s vaunted women’s team pursuit squad has started the 2014-2015 campaign with a silver medal in Saturday’s final in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Jasmin Glaesser, Stephanie Roorda, Allison Beveridge and Kirsti Lay posted the third fastest time (4:27.214) in qualifying Friday, setting up Saturday’s semi-final duel against New Zealand, the second fastest qualifier. Canada won that skirmish 4:23.5 to 4:25.3.

Ultimately, the powerful Great Britain outfit took the gold in Guadalajara, beating the Canadians by nearly five seconds. China nipped the Kiwis for the bronze.

Canadian Monique Sullivan finished her first sprint event in a couple of years by placing 17th. She will contest the women’s keirin Sunday.

Hugo Barrette opened up his keirin with a disappointing last place in his six-man heat, but got into the 7 to 12 spot final via repechage to come 8th. Barrette and Joseph Veloce, part of the team sprint trio that couldn’t qualify for further rounds, will be in Sunday’s sprint event.
