BMC repeat as world team time trial champions

American squad BMC took its second consecutive team time trial title Sunday at the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia. The collection of Italian, Swiss, Australian and American riders beat their worlds rivals Etixx-QuickStep by 12-seconds. Movistar’s bronze was the team’s first TTT medal in the four editions of the world championship race contested by trade teams.

Champion Systems-Stan’s No-Tubes rolled the 38.8-km course first and posted 47:22. Belgian Pro Continental outfit Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise held the early high mark of 44:27 but soon WorldTour teams were eclipsing its time.

Tom Dumoulin’s Giant-Alpecin set a time of 43:11, but Movistar finished four teams later, and with two-time Spanish chrono champ Jonathan Castroviejo at its core, the Movistar sextet smashed Giant’s time by 33-seconds.

Twice world champions, Etixx featured some heavies–three-time world individual time trial champion Tony Martin, Classics ace Tom Boonen and current world road champion Michael Kwiatkowski–and hoped to improve on its bronze of last season. The Belgian squad slotted into the top spot with 42:19.

Canadian Svein Tuft’s Orica-GreenEdge, whose team time trial line-up had garnered him three medals in three years and won this year’s TTT at the Giro d’Italia, would be denied in Virginia, posting a time 23-seconds slower than Movistar.

BMC, winner of the Vuelta a España team chrono, would defend its title with a 55.275 km/h ride. Four members of the sextet–Swiss Silvan Dillier, Italians Daniel Oss and Manuel Quinziato and Australian Rohan Dennis–also anchored the squad in last season’s triumph.

The action in Richmond continues Monday with the Junior women’s and U23 men’s individual chronos.
