Canadian track cycling championships results from Day 4 at the Milton velodrome

The final day of the 2014 Canadian track cycling championships on the Siberian spruce boards of the Milton, Ontario velodrome began with the Para individual pursuit but ended with a bit of disappointment as the hand-slinging action of the madison was cancelled. National team stalwart Monique Sullivan was a big winner of the Milton velodrome’s Pan Am/Parapan Am test event, winning four gold medals.

Ontarians Kevin Frost and Mark Burger took gold in the tandem individual pursuit, while Megan Fisher beat Équipe de Québec’s Marie Claude Molnar to take the para women’s individual pursuit honours. Fisher spoke about riding in the new velodrome: “Whoever made this track made the transitions so smooth that I think it would be a very inviting track for anyone, young or old.”

The keirin races dominated the morning session. Steve McKee (Ontario/Wheels of Bloor), Masters B points race winner on Monday, took the Masters B keirin title by holding off Chris Firek (Ontario/Racing Sportif), who beat him in the first round. Garnett Abbey (Erase Cancer) triumphed in the Masters C title. Abbey talked about derney strategy: “If you’re behind him when he pulls off, you’re breaking the wind. Anyone behind you used 40% less energy. Fortunately for me when the motorcycle pulled off, someone else took the pole and I conserved energy until the last lap and it worked out.”

Hugo Barrette may have gotten the better of national teammate Joseph Veloce in the sprint final, but Veloce prevailed in the keirin. Evan Carey from Cycling BC rounded out the podium.

Monique Sullivan’s fourth gold medal was won in the women’s keirin, where she beat out Sara Byers of Team Ontario and Kate O’Brien. Sullivan spoke of her national team aspirations: “It’s nice to able to see that I have good form going into the World Cup, we’re really building for the world championships five weeks from now, so that’s the real goal.

The afternoon session concentrated on the individual pursuit. Jane Rinard (Newmarket Eagles Cycling) took the Masters women’s gold over Ontario’s Shelly McKee (Novofit-Compass 360). Canadian cycling legend Steve Bauer grabbed Masters C gold with the win over Garnett Abbey. Once more it was McKee beating Firek in the Masters B final, while Quebec’s Mathieu Charreau (Trek-Fiera) got the better of Chris Reid (Ontario/The Cyclery) in the Masters A final.

With two hours left in the event, it was announced that the final race, the madison, wouldn’t be held. It was the only hiccup in a very impressive debut event in the Milton velodrome. It looks like the athletes of July’s Pan Am Games and August Parapan Am Games will be treated to a world class track.
