Lisa Brennauer brought the elite womens’ individual time trial title back to Germany for the fourth time in eight years as she edged Ukrainian Anna Solovey for Tuesday’s victory in Ponferrada, Spain. It was double gold for Brennauer, who had already garnered a top medal in Sunday’s team time trial with Specialized-lululemon. Brennauer’s Canadian teammate Karol-Ann Canuel came in sixth, finishing ahead of last year’s champion Ellen Van Dyck (The Netherlands).

Mid-way through the field, Canuel came over the line in second place with a time of 39:39.4 over the 29.5-km course after also being second at the time checks, but she found a Belgian bumping her down to third. However, the cream of the crop was still on course, with Solovey, American Evelyn Stevens, Germans Brennauer and Trixi Worrack, Kiwi Linda Villumsen and Van Dyck (The Netherlands) setting the times that promised medals. Solovey was setting the high water marks along the way.

Solovey finished in 39:06, but soon after German national champion Brennauer stopped the clock at 38:48. Defending champ Van Dijk came seventh and Villumsen’s five-year streak of podiums came to end as she placed ninth. Last year’s runner-up Stevens grabbed the bronze.

Canadian TT champion Leah Kirchmann was 27th on the day.

In the Junior men’s race, German Lennard Kamna rolled the 29.5-km route 44-seconds quicker than American Adrien Costa to take the gold. Australia continued its success in the chronos as Michael Storer won the bronze. The sole Canadian entrant, Pier-Andre Coté, placed 47th, 3:41 in arrears.
