Cycling Canada Cyclisme donated $14,000 in raised disaster relief funds to the town of Lac-Mégantic, Que., on Sunday. Jacques Landry, high performance director, presented the cheque to Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche.

On July 6th, a train loaded with 72 cars of crude oil derailed into the downtown of Lac-Mégantic killing 47 people, devastating nearly 60 per cent of the town and dumping millions of litres of crude oil into the environment. It was reported that the estimated total cleanup cost would exceed $200 million.

Lac-Mégantic is well known in the cycling community for hosting the national road championships on several occasions and being apart of the annual Tour de Beauce.

In response to the incident, Cycling Canada Cyclisme put together a disaster relief fund to help offset the cost of cleaning up and rebuilding the town.
