Cyclist killed while riding across Canada for WWF

On Monday, Graeme Loader was killed while riding his bike across Canada just east of Brandon, Man. The 24-year-old was riding on the Trans-Canada Highway heading east toward Winnipeg. At approximately 8 p.m. he was hit by an SUV also heading eastbound.

According to police reports alcohol was not a factor. The 28-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle and her three passengers were not injured in the accident. Loader’s name was released inadvertently as followers of his journey posted the terrible news on Facebook and a former co-worker emailed Global News the story of his passing.

Approximately five hours before his death, Loader, who was a photographer, posted his last photo on Facebook. Many of the photos of his trip can be found at Graeme Loader.

As an avid environmentalist, Loader hadn’t originally planned to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund. However, once he realized his journey and bike ride was a viable means to raise funds for the cause, he decided to do so.
