A breakaway of 18 riders formed on the race’s fifth stage that brought the riders 212-km from Lodi to South Lake Tahoe with over 4,000-m of climbing. The breakaway was reduced to three riders and 22-year-old Victoria native de Vos along with Skujins and Xabier Zandio lead the race. Skujins was able to nap his second career win at the Tour of California sprinting around de Vos with apparent ease for the win.

Julian Alaphilippe came in with the peloton retaining his overall lead heading into the 20-km Stage 6 time trial around Lake Tahoe. De Vos’ teammate Evan Huffman retains the KOM jersey while Peter Sagan holds onto the points jersey.
