Garmin-Sharp’s bikes stolen

Will miss last two stages of the Tour Méditerranéen

Garmin-Sharp finds itself out of the Tour Méditerranéen with two stages to go after the team’s road bikes were stolen from their truck Friday night. The stage race in southern France has already faced disappointment after yesterday’s stage three had to be cancelled due to the race organizers’ inability to secure the stage route.

Thieves nicked sixteen Cervelo R5’s, leaving the time trial bikes that were used on Thursday’s chrono course and prompting David Millar to tweet “Scumbags clearly don’t like TT’s”. Riders like Thomas Dekker, Dan Martin and Andrew Talansky have been left high and dry before today’s queen stage that ends on Mont Faron.

The incident is reminiscent of one last May when Team TIBCO’s Specialized Amira SL4’s were pinched in Boise, Idaho before the Exergy Tour. The bikes were recovered and the squad was able to continue. TIBCO’s Canadian Tara Whitten finished 16th on GC.

With two stages left, Lars Boom (The Netherlands/Blanco) leads the race after winning Thursday’s time trial.
