Garrigan achieves Worlds’ goal

Cyclocross racer amasses enough UCI points to make Canadian team

What Michael Garrigan nearly accomplished last weekend in Rhode Island, U.S.A., he achieved this past weekend in New York. Garrigan almost amassed enough UCI points at the NEPCX-NBX Gran Prix of Cyclocross Dec. 2 in Rhode Island to qualify for Canada’s world championships squad. However, his second and third place finishes in East Meadow, N.Y., have earned him shot at the national squad. Garrigan finished 16th at the Canadian nationals championships last month in Surrey, B.C.

East Meadow’s Supercross Cup was postponed more than a month by Hurricane Sandy, but final got underway Saturday. Garrigan (Blacksmith Cycle-Stage Race) came runner-up to Dan Timmerman (Richard Sachs-RGM-Radix) on the first day one before placing third on Sunday, gaining enough UCI points to qualify for the Worlds in Louisville, Ky.

Kerry Werner (BMC U23 Development) vaulted from third on Saturday to first on Sunday.

The 2013 UCI Cyclocross World Championships will be held February 2-3.
