Watch: Italian Gianni Moscon holds onto team car, disqualified from world championships

Italian rider took an extended tow from his team car after a crash

Italian Gianni Moscon has been disqualified from his 29th finish in the elite men’s world championship road race in Bergen won on Sunday by Peter Sagan (Slovakia).

Moscon was the only rider able to follow Frechman’s Julian Alaphilippe’s dangerous attack the final time the peloton hit Salmon Hill. With 5 km to go, the two riders had a gap to a powerful chase group. In the end they would be caught and Sagan became the three-time world champion out-sprinting Alexandre Kristoff (Norway) and Michael Matthews (Australia).

Moscon, who rides for Team Sky professionally, found himself on the deck with 35 km remaining and received a tow from his team car that was caught on camera by a motor bike. Moscon was able to make contact with the front group thanks to the tow and played an important role in the finale of the race.

Moscon would finish 29th but that result was stripped from him as the video clearly shows him holding onto his team car as it passes through the feed zone with 34 km remaining. The attack he made with Alaphilippe helped the Italian team who did not need to chase as the race descended towards the finish line. His teammate Matteo Trentin sprinted to fourth place behind Sagan, Kristoff and Matthews.

Earlier this season, Moscon was suspended by Team Sky for using racially abusive language direct towards FDJ’s Kevin Reza.
