Glaesser 10th in Glasgow Commonwealth Games time trial

Kiwi Linda Villumsen dug deep to win the women’s time trial at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Thursday, nipping Emma Pooley of England by six seconds though Pooley had been fastest at all the intermediate time checks. Canada’s Jasmin Glaesser placed tenth, 44:12 to Villumsen’s 42:25 over the rolling, technical 29.6 km course. Katrin Garfoot of Australia was the bronze medal winner.

On Tuesday, Pooley announced her retirement from professional cycling once she has worked for compatriot Lizzie Armitstead in Sunday’s road race. Pooley was the silver medallist in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games and took the world chrono title in 2010.

Villumsen’s win is a welcome breakthrough for the rider, who was silver time trial medallist in the Delhi Commonwealth Games four years ago and has been on the world championships time trial podium throughout the last three years.

Laura Brown, Glaesser’s track cycling team pursuit teammate, placed 16th, 4:10 in arrears, and national time trial champion Leah Kirchman came 23rd, 6:40 down, after a crash.
