Guillaume Boivin hits his stride at the Tour de Poland

Canadian Guillaume Boivin (Cannondale) found the beginning stages of the Tour de Poland to his liking, as he placed in the top ten in the first two days.

Boivin was fourth in the bunch sprint in Sunday’s opener, won by Yauheni Hutarovich (Belarus/Ag2r), a stage affected by hail and trees blown onto the roads.

Monday’s stage into Warsaw saw Czech neo-pro Petr Vakoc (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) survive out of the day’s breakaway to take the win ahead of a peloton that seemed to have forgotten about him. Michael Matthews (Australia/Orica-GreenEdge) raised his arms in errant celebration, while Boivin came 8th.

On Tuesday’s Stage 3, Boivin was at the front as the bunch sprint struggled to develop in Rzeszow but perhaps a little too soon. Theo Bos (The Netherlands/Belkin) took the win, his sixth of the season. Boivin got caught behind a crash inside the kilometre mark, so Hugo Houle (Ag2r) was the top Canadian at 37th. Vakoc kept the race lead.

Wednesday is the last flat stage before two days in the mountains and a concluding time trial.

Recently Boivin received good news that he’s on Cannondale’s provisional start list for the much-anticipated Vuelta a España August 23 to September 14. At last year’s Vuelta, Boivin started his first Grand Tour but did not finish the 10th stage.
