Hell and Heck of the North results

Organizers of the Hell of the North set out to create one of the toughest racing days on the spring calendar. The 125-km course spanned gravel and dirt roads, rail trails and featured numerous hill climbs peppered with ice, mud and fallen trees; this past Sunday’s race was arguably the most grueling Spring Classic of the 2014 season.

Colin Busby (Realdeal/Gears p/b Waspcam) navigated the demanding terrain in approximately 4 hours to win the race’s sixth edition. (He was last year’s runner-up.) Busby was pursued by Nathan Chown (Team 905) who took the silver medal; Osmond Bakker (Octto-Cervelo) the bronze.

Antje Thamm (Kallisto-FCV) secured the top spot in the women’s race and was joined on the podium by Jamie Gilgen (Realdeal/Gears p/b Waspcam) in second. (It was the reverse result two days prior at the Good Friday Road Race where Gilgen was first and Thamm second.) Rhonda Stickle (Realdeal/Gears p/b Waspcam) was third.

The Heck of the North — the 70-km road-race complement to Hell — took place concurrently and was billed as a shorter but still challenging ride for road cyclists.

Sean Boileau (Realdeal/Gears p/b Waspcam) crossed the line first in that race followed closely by Trevor O’Donell and Niles Vaivars (Realdeal/Gears p/b Waspcam) in second and third respectively.

Realdeal/Gears presented by Waspcam’s Sarah Rasmussen took the Heck of the North women’s race over Paige Foxcroft (CSAJ CC p/b Norco LG) and Alexandra Morley (Realdeal/Gears p/b Waspcam).

The competition for King and Queen of Spring titles culminates next week at the Paris to Ancaster.
