Live coverage replay – 2012 Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec

Follow the race on September 7 from 11 a.m to 4:30 p.m EST

Two of the top ranked cycling events in the world are set to take place this weekend in Quebec, Canada. The Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec City on September 7 and Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal on September 9 are classed as WorldTour one-day races that will feature 22 of the top teams in international bike racing.

Canadian Cycling Magazine will have live coverage of both events from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST. We’ll also post updates and photos on Facebook.

Cycling fans gathered at the airport in Quebec City to greet riders. Europcar’s Thomas Voeckler, who won the race in 2010, stopped and signed autographs and chatted briefly.

So did Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma-Quick Step). Chavanel said his flight went by quickly and he managed to get some down time as he watched a couple of movies.

The Grand Prix races will also give cycling fans a great opportunity to see Canada’s top riders. Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Sharp) will be looking for a top result, and so will David Veilleux (Europcar) and Michael Barry (Sky). Also on the start line for both circuit races will be SpiderTech p/b C10 along with several other Canadians racing with the national team.

The classic-style circuits play into the hands of one-day specialists. Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec will offer the field 16 laps of a 12.6 km circuit for a total of 201.6 km. The race travels parallel to the Saint Lawrence River and through the historical downtown. It is a well-known cycling route previously used at the Canadian National Championships and Tour de Beauce.

Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal is 17 laps of a 12.1 km circuit for a total of 205.7 km. Each lap includes a climb over Mont Royal, a section of the course used in the 1974 World Championships, 1976 Olympic Games and the former men’s and women’s World Cup events.

A few days before the race Salas said, “the Canadian National team has only been invited to the Quebec Grand Prix [not Montreal], so that will have to do. I am familiar with the course from the Tour de Beauce. It’s a challenging course that has windy sections as well as a tough climb leading through the start finish. It’s a good course for me and I will be looking at getting into the early move. I have had a little bit of rest over the last couple of weeks and I am just ready to go!”
