Louis Garneau joins elites at national road championships

Former amateur fulfills dream of racing pro

Louis Garneau, founder of the cycling apparel company Louis Garneau Sports Inc., will join the under-23/elite men on the start line at the Canadian national road championships held on Saturday between Saint-Georges and Saint-Odilon, Que.

Garneau, 54, is also the co-sponsor of the Continental team Garneau-Quebecor that will field a full squad on the start line of the 187-km road race.

“I’ve always dreamed of being pro, but in my time, going the Olympics meant we had to remain amateur. That’s why on Saturday, I’ll be fulfilling my dream of competing as a pro, and what’s more, I’ll be doing it as the oldest pro on the planet, according to the UCI!,” said Louis Garneau in a press release. “As well as realizing my dream, I’m also happy to do this race to support my team. My game plan is to race for 60 minutes, then I’ll go see the finish, just for the fun of it!”

During the 1970s and 80s, Garneau raced as an amateur for the Canadian national team. He competed at the world championships and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
