Nieuwold wins for the Elite women, Jette jets to the finish in the Elite men’s race at the Ontario Cup XC

Following the Ontario provincial cross-country championships, which took place yesterday at Highlands Nordic in Duntroon, Ont., the province's elite, junior and under-23 mountain bikers have a new vanguard.

Following the Ontario provincial cross-country championships, which took place yesterday at Highlands Nordic in Duntroon, Ont., the province’s elite, junior and under-23 mountain bikers have a new vanguard.

The Elite women’s race was a 29.26 km, consisting of four laps. Clocking a time of 0:43:20, Elyse Nieuwold of Holiday Inn Calgary/Northwest placed first, followed with a two minute gap by Sue Haviland of Norco Evolution and Laura Bietola, an independent rider, who finished third 4:19 behind Nieuwold’s time. In the U23 women’s class — also a 29.26 km four-lap course — Katlyn Dundas of Wolfpak Racing/Inception Cyclery finished first, rolling across the finish with a time of 0:46:28, followed by Sarah Lynch of Two Wheel Racing with a gap of 2:07, Allison Sauder of Waterloo Cycling Club in third with 5:37, and Siobhan Kelly, riding for ToWheels/EpicSportsPerf/BCC, 7:36 behind Dundas.

In the Junior expert men’s class, a course with the same laps and the same distance, Tyler Orschel of Trek Canada Mountain Bike Team came in first with a time of 0:27:18, with Liam Mulcahy of Cycle Solutions Angry Johnny’s p/b Norco LG 2:14 behind, and Mulcahy’s teammate, Malcolm Barton, finishing third with a time of 3:48. Mulcahy’s and Barton’s team was also represented on the podium following the Junior expert women’s race, when Rebecca Harvey placed second with a time of 12:22. Coming in first was Erica Leonard, riding for Centurion Next Wave, who finished first at 0:21:37.

The Elite men’s and U23 men’s race, on the other hand, was a longer, five lap course, totaling 36.53 kilometres. In the U23 class, Davis Ross of AWI Racing finished first, clocking in at 0:46:38, followed by Corey Brioschi of Giro/Bell/Blackburn at 11:27, and Alex Schmidt of Wolfpak Racing/Inception Cyclery 15:31 behind Ross.

And for the Elite men, it was Cameron Jette of Scott/3 Rox Racing who came in first, with a winning time of 0:43:34. Close behind was Trek Canada Mountain Bike Team’s Peter Glassford, ranking second at 0:10, and teammate Adam Morka at 0:53.
