Numainville wins the elite women’s national time trial championship

Todd and Glaesser take second and third

Thursday, on the roads south of Saint-Benoît-Labre, Joëlle Numainville won the national time trial championship battle against the clock. Numainville rode the 27-km route in 39:54. Anika Todd and Jasmin Glaesser came in second and third spots, respectively, with times of 40:14 and 40:33. Glaesser is the top under-23 rider.

“I raced well in the United States this year with my team Optum-Kelly Benefits,” said Numainville. “As the season progressed, my time trials improved quite a bit. Even with tired legs, I was able to make it on the podium. I was confident, but to win, you still need to be ready on race day.

“I’m really happy with the championship title. It’s certain that road races are very important to me. It was very difficult today in the time trial with a strong wind. Wednesday, I told myself that it was a very good course, without too many flats. We can therefore think that there would be selections. So I arrived at the start line this morning confident to perform.”

Numainville improves on her fifth place finish at last year’s national time trial competition. The 2013 the champion’s jersey goes from Clara Hughes, who did not compete in this year’s event, to the 25-year-old rider. Numainville’s team, Optum Pro Cycling presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies, had two other riders in the top 10: Denise Ramsden in forth and Leah Kirchmann in fifth.
