Ontario’s the Silver Goose cyclocross race receives UCI status for 2017 edition

Trek CXC Cup gets slot on World Cup calendar and offers equal payouts to men and women

UCI cyclocross racing is returning to Canada after a year hiatus. The Silver Goose cyclocross race in Midland, Ont. has been awarded two days of UCI racing in 2017. Cycling’s governing body announced the full schedule for the upcoming season also announcing that the Trek CXC Cup in Waterloo, Wisconsin has become a World Cup event.

The Silver Goose made its debut on Oct. 26th, 2014 and after growing in 2015 became the venue for the 2016 Ontario provincial cyclocross championships. In 2017 it will hold UCI C2 status hosting two days of racing on Oct. 21 and 22. The race was inspired by an impromptu trip to the 2013 cyclocross world championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

Meanwhile, American cyclocross fans will continue to have two UCI World Cup races on the 2017-18 schedule. Iowa City’s Jingle Cross returns for a second season and becomes the World Cup opener on Sept. 16, 2017 while the Trek CXC Cup in Waterloo, Wisconsin is elevated to the World Cup circuit.

The event takes place behind Trek’s headquarters in Waterloo on the weekend of September 22 to 24, 2017. The weekend will include amateur and professional racing beginning on Sept. 22 and will culminate with the elite men’s and women’s World Cup events on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Trek has been hosting races at their headquarters since 2013. In 2016, the event was given UCI C1 status attracting the Telenet-Fidea team and reigning world champion Wout Van Aert. Now the organizers will work throughout the spring and summer to prepare the venue of a World Cup event.

“We felt like we took a huge step in 2016 with the CXC Cup,” said Trek race shop manager Scott Daubert. “After it was over, we asked ourselves, ‘What’s next?’ Trek is a place that always pushes for bigger and better, and the World Cup will be no exception.”

Trek have also committed to awarding equal payouts for the men’s and women’s events. The event will continue to be free to attend with a festive atmosphere with food, beverages, merchandise, and amenities available onsite.

“The U.S. continues to break new ground in ‘cross and World Cup Waterloo is proof,” said race organizer Brook Watts who was brought on for 2017. “It’s a joy to oversee what will be a great celebration of cross driven by Trek’s enthusiasm. We will have lots of announcements to make as we get closer to September.”

The UCI also announced that Bogense, Denmark will host the 2019 cyclocross world championships. The city is situated 20-0km west of Copenhagen. Denmark last hosted the UCI cyclocross world championships in Middelfart in 1998. The 2018 cyclocross world championships take place in Valkenburg, Netherlands on Feb. 3 and 4.
