Ryder Hesjedal heading to Trek Factory Racing in 2016

Ryder Hesjedal

Canadian Ryder Hesjedal, winner of the 2012 Giro d’Italia, is moving from American WorldTour squad Cannondale-Garmin to another American team, Trek Factory Racing, in 2016, it was announced on Wednesday. The 34-year old Hesjedal spent eight seasons racing for the different incarnations of Slipstream Sports’ squads, winning not only the 2012 Giro but also two stages of the Vuelta a España during that time.

Trek tweeted the announcement Wednesday morning.

In a Trek press release which stressed that the Canadian would be “a General Classification leader, notably for Italy’s Grand Tour”, Hesjedal said, “I am very excited about this. Trek’s management and I are on the same page in terms of what we can achieve together. I know that I still have podium level legs for the Grand Tours. The Ardennes Classics will be important as well. You basically work backwards with the Giro being the number one goal. The rhythm to get to your best shape in the Giro leads you to those races. I know the routine to get there.”

Hesjedal also noted that he would be racing Trek bicycles again, as he did with U.S. Postal and Discovery just over a decade ago.

This season Ryder fought to fifth in the Giro d’Italia and 40th in the Tour de France. Hesjedal will be contesting the third Tour of Alberta and the two WorldTour Grand Prix Cycliste races in September.

Cannondale-Garmin recently announced the signing of Canadian Michael Woods, who raced for Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies this season.
