Another Tour de San Luis stage winner came from the breakaway on Friday, as German Tivani (Argentina) beat countrymen Emiliano Ibarra (Sindicato Empleados Públicos of San Juan) and two-time champion Dani Diaz (Delko Marseille) in Juana Koslay. Their compatriot, Eduardo Sepulveda (Fortuneo – Vital Concept) keeps the race lead he gained winning Thursday’s mountain stage. On Wednesday, Dutchman Peter Koning of Drapac grabbed victory out of a breakaway to take a one-day race lead.

The breakaway was actually a quartet but Uruguayan Ramiro Cabrera couldn’t hold his breakmates as they rushed towards the 6-km gradual climb to the finish. A crash held the peloton back from making the catch. In the final kilometres Tivani and Diaz engaged in a spirited exchange of attacks, but the decision would come from a sprint between the trio.

The Elia Viviani-led peloton came in 1:34 later. Sepulveda keeps a three second lead on the Quintana brothers–3-seconds over Dayer and 42-seconds faster than Nairo.

Saturday is the queen stage, one that ends with a 17-km long climb that contains three levels of ascent, a Cat. 3 followed by two Cat. 1’s.
