SpiderTech on hiatus for 2013

Director Steve Bauer to focus on gaining WorldTour status for the team

Fan will not see the Spiders racing in the 2013 season. SpiderTech powered by C10, Canada’s only professional continental team, announced Friday that is postponing racing activities next year.

“We’re stepping away from continental competition in order to focus our efforts on gaining UCI WorldTour status,” said Steve Bauer, owner of Cycle Sport Management Inc., in a statement.  “We have made the decision to focus our efforts entirely on making the jump to the WorldTour in 2014 and have determined that we need to acquire additional financial partnerships to reach this goal.”

The team will honour all of its financial commitments to the riders throughout 2013. Currently, Bauer and his co-directeur sportifs, Kevin Field and Michael Carter, are reaching out to other professional continental and continental squads to see if these teams can take on Spiders in the next season. In 2014, the riders will all come back to the SpiderTech fold.

The team has had professional continental status since 2011. In 2012, it had a number of notable races. Hugo Houle won the Tour de Quebec, came second in the Tour de Beauce and took the climber’s jersey at Coupe des Nations Ville de Saguenay. He and Lucas Euser also animated the Grand Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec in the race’s breakaway. But, Houle’s most memorable result for 2012 is the photo finish that saw him place fourth at the UCI world championship under-23 road race. Zach Bell won the challenge sprint in Quebec City, edging out Matt Goss of Orica-GreenEdge. François Parisien won the Tour of Elk Grove. Euser performed well at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, finishing 16th in the general classification.
