Sullivan and Glaesser in action for Canada on day three of UCI track cycling world championships

On Wednesday’s first day of the UCI track cycling world championships in Paris, France, Canadians Monique Sullivan and Kate O’Brien placed 18th in the team sprint competition. On Friday’s third day Sullivan qualified for the sprint by rolling the flying 200-metres in 14th place with a time of 11.016. In the 1/16 finals Sullivan, the Canadian champion of the sprint, was bested by Australian Victoria Williamson.

Sullivan will contest one more event in Sunday’s keirin.

Jasmin Glaesser grabbed her fourth worlds team pursuit medal Thursday, and then faced the individual pursuit event Friday. The individual pursuit qualifying is a bit cruel, with only the top four athletes continuing. While Glaesser beat Cuban Marlies Mejias Garcia soundly, she posted the sixth fastest time of 3:34.827 and her day was over. Australian Rebecca Wiasak took home the gold.

The highlight of the day for the Parisians in the Vélodrome de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines was François Pervis winning his second gold medal of the worlds in the 1-km time trial, his third “kilo” world title. The Frenchman took home three gold medals from Cali, Colombia last year.

Saturday sees more action for the Canadians, with team pursuit bronze medalist Allison Beveridge in the scratch race and Joseph Veloce and Hugo Barrette in the sprint.
