Video: Types of trainers

Fluid-resistance, magnetic-resistance or rollers: what's right for you?

In this video, Andrew Randell talks to Wil Mills from Cycle Solutions in Toronto about various indoor trainers.

Trainers provide resistance via magnetic resistance or fluid resistance. A magnetic-resistance trainer uses magnets on a flywheel to force you to pedal harder. With a fluid-resistance trainer, an impeller spinning within a viscous material will make your legs burn.

Andrew and Wil also talk about rollers. One of the advantages of a roller is that the cyclist is forced to use his or her core muscles when riding.

In the end, the trainer you use will depend on your budget, training goals and the specific skills you’re working to develop. The good news is there’s a trainer out there for every rider.
