A dozen Canadians at the 12th Tour of Utah

A lot of climbing awaits the peloton in Utah

One of the biggest stage races in the USA begins on Monday, as the 2.HC UCI-rated 12th Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah kicks off in the south of the state in Zion Canyon City. The seven-stage race is a climby affair featuring four WorldTour teams and twelve Canadian riders.

The early stages are based around one big climb, with Bristlecone, Boulder Mountain and Mt. Nebo the centre stages respectively over the first three days. August 4 has a jagged profile sure to wear out the riders before they hit the finish in Kearns. Stage 5 throws five climbs at the field, including two hauls up Bountiful Bench.

Stage 6 is the queen stage and only summit finish in the 2016 Tour of Utah. The riders have Guardsman Pass to clamber before the summit finish at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, with 1830-metres of climbing in the last 56-km.

The queen stage is a doozy.

The final stage with the traditional finish in Park City is no processional either.

Joe Dombrowski
(USA/Cannondale-Drapac) is back to defend his title, and though 2015 runner-up and Dombrowski’s teammate Michael Woods is elsewhere, Andrew Talansky is another GC contender for Cannondale. Darwin Atapuma (Colombia/BMC) impressed at this year’s Giro d’Italia and Tour du Suisse. Axeon Hagens Berman has likely young lads in Neilson Powless (USA) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Great Britain).

Canada’s best GC hope is Rob Britton of Rally Cycling, 11th in the Tour of California and on the podium at the Silver City Tour of the Gila. Rally also sends Canadian climber Adam De Vos and Canuck sprinter Pierrick Naud.

The orange-and-black-clad Silber Pro Cycling‘s all-Canadian squad consists of national time trial champion Ryan Roth, 2015 Tour of Alberta King of the Mountains Ben Perry, Tour of the Gila runner-up Alexander Cataford, Kris Dahl, Matteo Dal-Cin, Nigel Ellsay, David Drouin and Nicolas Masbourian.
