Cycling App helps commuters and city planners

RADDWhen Wiesbaden, a city in South West Germany was declared the worst city in Germany for cycling, a group of enthusiasts from a local creative agency decided to take action to spearhead change. The agency, Scholz & Volkmer created an app called Radwende.

Radwende effectively tracks cycling routes through the city and then the data is compiled into one map. Routes that are more frequently used by cyclists will appear both darker and bolded compared to other routes that are less popular. The concept is to crowd source data in order get real and tangible evidence of where improved infrastructure is needed.

Not only will cyclists know which routes are best based on the shading and boldness of the roads, city planners will also have a greater perspective now that they can see where to dedicate the focus of their projects.

Radwende was launched in May and since then more than 3000 routes have been mapped. It has gained traction among cyclists because both the citizens of Wiesbaden and city planners want to change their city for the better.

The campaign to promote the new app really gained momentum when data was displayed in real time at a local Museum. Using a robot, Radwende drew the maps of cycling routes as they poured into the data base.
