Ontario will play host to another world-class cycling event in 2018, Cycling Canada announced today, when the Pan-American Cyclocross Championships come to Canada that year, presented by the national cycling body and CykelHaus Race Promotions.

Previously held in Kentucky and Ohio, the competition to be held in Midland, Ont. for both the 2018 and 2019 race seasons will mark the first time that Canada has hosted the championships.

“Our team is incredibly excited to invite the Americas to Midland,” said John Hauser, Silver Goose event director. “It is a fantastic opportunity, and the benefits will go well beyond cycling for our rural community. We have partnered with the local Georgian Bay Hospital Foundation to raise funds through the event.”

Over the course of a weekend, the winners of the Pan-American championships will be decided through five categories: Junior men, U23 women and men, and Elite women and men. A Masters Pan-American Championships will be added to the event in 2018 for the first time, for 10 year age groups, aged 35 and above. Cyclists will come to Midland from 44 nations spanning the Pan-American Cycling Confederation, which ranges from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic Circle.

“The announcement,” said Brook Watts, the Pan-American Cyclocross Commission’s chairperson, “is further proof of the continued globalization of our sport as the Championship begins to draw interest and host bids from other nations.”

Josh Peacock, competition coordinator for Cycling Canada, offered his thoughts on the event’s prestige and what it means for the recently-announced host country. “Cyclocross continues to be one of our country’s most sought-after racing disciplines,” Peacock said. “Welcoming the Pan-American Cyclocross Championships to Canada will be a testament to the strong level of organization and competition that our country has become known for in recent years.”
