David Boily signs with Italian team

Announcement of new team comes as relief for former SpiderTech rider after Cannondale contract fell through

David Boily has not had an easy off season.
First, the 22-year-old professional road rider from Quebec found out in October that his team, SpiderTech powered by C10, was suspending racing for the 2013 season. Team Cannondale then announced it had signed Boily along with fellow Quebecker Guillaume Boivin, but that contract fell through and as January rolled around with no contract in sight things were looking grim.
It was a frustrating turn of events for a rider who finished second in the 2011 Tour de l’Avenir and led the climbers’ classification in the 2012 Tour of California.
That all changed this week as Boily announced he’s signed with an Italian team and will soon be heading over to Europe to start his season.
“It’s a big weight off my shoulders,” said Boily, who despite the setbacks has kept training and reckons he’s in better shape than in previous years. “It’s really good to see the motivation is there and I’ll be able to race very soon.”
Boily can’t yet reveal the name of the team, but a news release to announce his signing is expected soon. He said a combined effort between SpiderTech management and Boily’s own agent helped land him the contract.
For now, Boily is focusing on getting ready to travel to his new home in Lucca, just north of Pisa. He’ll be sharing the town with his former SpiderTech teammates Boivin and Brian Vandborg.
“I don’t know the precise date (I’m travelling over) but it should be towards the beginning of next week,” he said. As for when his racing season starts, “I don’t know the race or the date yet, but it should be mid-February.”
Besides the racing, Boily will have one other challenge: learning a new language and culture.
“I can say just hello, thank you, water – the basics. One of my goals for the season will be to learn the language,” he said.
