Two-wheeled weekend plans

Racing and riding options across the country

Canada’s best mountain bike racers are gathering this week to contest big races on the domestic calendar.

Downhill racers will be bombing runs at Panorama Mountain, B.C., for the Canadian Championships. Last year, Panorama hosted a round of the Canada Cup. Winners of the men’s and women’s elite races were Remi Gauvin and Danice Uyesugi.

Organisers are still seeking additional volunteers for race day, which could include a location trackside. For move information, visit http://www.panoramaresort.com/BikeRaces

Round three of the cross country Canada Cup takes place on Sunday, July 14, in Sudbury, Ont. The entry list is highlighted by World Cup regulars Catharine Pendrel and Emily Batty. The race serves as a tune-up ahead of next week’s Canadian Championships, at Hardwood Hills, north of Barrie, Ont.

Both the elite men and women will start the race at 11:30am.

For those who would like their riding with a little less competition, Blue Mountain in Collingwood, Ont., is hosting PedalFest, a weekend of cycling activities with options for the whole family. Road riders will try their hand at the Centurion rides, the longest lasting 160km. Mountain bikers can take on Blue’s XC or DH trails.

Those hoping for entertainment and spectacle won’t be disappointed. Live music and movie screenings will take place throughout the weekend.

The invitation-only Whip It contest will reward riders who can show off the biggest tailwhip, while the Blazing Saddles relay race will team climbers with descenders, racing up and down the mountain twice before reaching the finish line.
