Disera and Vermette on top at penultimate Canada Cup round

Canmore Canada Cup

One year after earning his second straight elite cross country national championship there in 2018, Peter Disera was back on the top podium step in Canmore, Alberta.

The Norco Factory Racing rider won the sixth Canada Cup XCO round of 2019, held at the Canmore Nordic Centre.

On Women’s side, Roxane Vermette continued her Canmore winning streak as well. Vermette won two consecutive junior women’s national titles at the Canmore Nordic Centre, in 2017 and 2018. This is the two time junior national champion’s first elite Canada Cup XCO win.

Elite Men

Peter Disera (Norco Factory Team) led the field through the Rocky Mountain race course to take a second straight Canada Cup win. Disera won the previous weekend’s Canada Cup in Whistler. This weekend it was Marc-Andre Fortier (Pivot Cycles-OTE) and Holden Jones (Pendrel Racing) joining Disera on the podium. With his second place in Canmore, Fortier moves into the Canada Cup leaders jersey.

Elite Women

Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges’ Roxane Vermette (CC MSA) moved up from her fourth place finish in Whistler last week to take the elite women’s win in Canmore, Alberta. Joining Vermette on the podium was Marianne Théberge (Equipe du Quebec / CC MSA) in second and Edmonton’s Sidney McGill (Pedalhead Racing).

With her win in Canmore, Vermette takes control of the elite women’s Canada Cup leaders jersey.

Junior Men and Women

With the Canmore Canada Cup counting towards the UCI Junior Series, there was s strong international presence on the start line. Xavier Roy (Equipe du Quebec / Ponsse) was the winner in the junior men’s field, leading out American Bjorn Riley (Bear Development) and Courtenay, B.C.’s Hamish Graham.

On the Women’s side, Colorado’s Madeline Robbins used her familiarity with riding at altitude to take the junior win. Samuelle Baillargeon (CVM Sigma Assurance) and Juliette Larose-Gingras (Vélo Cartel x BL Coaching), both of Lac Beauport, finished second and third.

Vincent Thiboutot (Pivot Cycles-OTE), 5th in Canmore, and Madeleine Vallieres-Mill are the Canada Cup leaders after six rounds of racing.

Under-17 Men and Women

Marin Lowe (Team Squamish) and Owen Clark (Homestead Racing) both scored back-to-back Canada Cup round wins. The two winner’s from the previous weekend’s Whistler Canada Cup were back on the top podium step in the Rockies. Clark edged out Leif Rodgers (Cycling B.C.) and Erik Ashton (Comox, B.C.) for the win. Elli Clark (Homestead Racing) and Ella Myers of Calgary followed Lowe in second and third.

Canada Cup series racing returns for the final round of 2019 on August 17. As in 2018, the nation-wide cross country series will conclude on the east coast in Kentville, N.S. with a UCI C2 ranked event.

Before the final round of Canada Cup racing, Hardwood Ski & Bike in Ontario will host 2019 XCO Canadian National Championships on July 20-21.
