Crankworx FMB Slopestyle World Championships – Rheeder vs. Rogatkin Round II

Several of Canada’s biggest names in mountain biking will be looking for podiums, and wins in Innsbruck. Brett Rheeder is aiming for a second straight win in the Crankworx Slopestyle World Tour. Rheeder took an early in the series after winning  the opening round in New Zealand with a stunning run. Perennial rival Nicholi Rogatkin has won the Innsbruck event the last two years running, though, and will be looking for redemption after finishing ninth in Rotorua.

“I used to hate the rivalry,” said Rheeder about the constant attention paid to the battles for the top, first between he and Brandon Semenuk, and more recently Rogatkin. “Now I’m able to look at that and say, ‘that actually was the reason why he went and learned those tricks, and that was the reason why I learned my tricks.’ And then when you step back from it, you can see ‘Oh, the sport actually just went up three notches.’”

Emil Johansson will be looking to disrupt the rivalry between Rogatkin and Rheeder. The Swede made an impressive return to competition in Whistler 2018 after a serious injury, but was sidelined again in Rotorua. Innsbruck will mark Johansson’s first Crankworx Slopestyle competition but, when he’s on form, the tall Swede can be hard to beat.

iXS Downhill Innsbruck

Before the slopestyle events sends riders sky-high, iXS downhill racing will send them speeding to the valley below. World Cup racers will mix it up with Crankworx series riders on the Mutters downhill track. The natural, technical track is a classic downhill course with jumps, roots and tricky corners to test riders abilities.

Tracey Hannah, winner of last weekend’s World Cup in Lenzerheide, will line up against Emilie Siegenthaler and World Cup third place New Zealand rider Kate Weatherly. Hunting Queen of Crankworx points will be Canada’s Vaea Verbeeck and Casey Brown, as well as Anneke Beerten, currently third in that competition.

On the men’s side, Brook Macdonald, Laurie Greenland and Charlie Harrison will lead out the men’s World Cup downhillers, along with Canadians Ben Wallace and Kirk McDowall. They’ll be joined by Bas van Steenbergen, hunting King of Crankworx points on the DH track.
