Results: XCC Woodruff surprises, van der Poel reigns

Peter Disera scores seventh in Czech Republic short track race

Bear Mountain Canada Cup 2019

Short Track proved again on Friday how the shorter race format can animate a World Cup race weekend. A surprise winner in the women’s race, and the latest round of the back-and-forth duel between two start racers in the men’s event showed that the new new race is worth watching.

Canadians capitalize on Short Track opportunity

Canada’s Peter Disera (Norco Factory Team) was one of the big beneficiaries, earning a front row start for Sunday’s XCO. Disera led a chase group to finish seventh in the XCC, just two seconds off Mathieu van der Poel’s start. Following his 19th place XCO finish last week in Albstadt, Germany, the front row start is a huge opportunity for the Canadian to move up in the World Cup field.

Haley Smith added a second big result for the Norco Factory Team in Friday’s XCC. The Uxbridge, Ont. rider finished 14th, earning her a second row start on Sunday. Following her ninth at last weekend’s XCO event, Smith should be set to shine on the more technical Nové Mesto course.

Woodruff surprises the field

The big surprise on Friday was American Chloe Woodruff winning the elite women’s race. Woodruff finished alone in front, making for two XCC wins for the U.S. following Kate Courtney’s win last weekend in Germany. Courtney finished fourth this Friday behind Annie Last in second and Jolanda Neff in third. After dominating Short Track racing all last season, Annika Langvad continued to struggle, finishing 15th in Nové Mesto.

Emily Batty finished 24th, just squeezing into the final qualifying position for a third row start. Racing was incredibly tight in Friday’s XCC. Catharine Pendrel finished 29th and Sandra Walter 31st, both within three seconds of Batty’s finishing time. Pendrel and Walter will both start Sunday, but will be seeded from the fourth row onward based on their UCI ranking.

Van der Poel unshakeable

Mathieu van der Poel showed yet again that he has unbeatable top end speed, holding off Maxime Marotte to claim a second straight Short Track victory. Nino Schurter again came close, finishing fourth just one second behind, but could not find his way to the front to take his first XCC win.

The lead puts Mathieu van der Poel back in front of the World Cup standings. The Dutch rider has said he plans on skipping the next to World Cup rounds to try recover from the combined effort of a cyclocross season, spring Classics campaign on the road and opening World Cup XC rounds. Whether his position after Sunday changes his plan or not remains to be seen.

XCO racing starts on Sunday in Nové Mesto, and you can watch live on Red Bull TV.
