Rohan Dennis takes the win as the race leader put in the time trial of his life to maintain the race lead

Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quickstep) retained his race leader’s jersey in the 20-km time trial on Stage 6 of the Tour of California. The Frenchman put in the time trial of his career despite doubts of whether he could fend the lead with Rohan Dennis (BMC) within striking distance.

Dennis put in a convincing effort putting 17-seconds into his closest rival, American national TT champion Andrew Talansky, with the race leader still on course. Alaphilippe came to the line in eighth only loosing 45-seconds to Dennis who was 1:01 in arrears before the stage. Dennis’ teammate, Taylor Phinney rounded out the podium in third.

With his efforts, Dennis moved to second in the GC. Neilson Powless, the wearer of the best young riders jersey put in a valiant effort as well, the 19-year-old American only gained one position in the GC to move into fifth but placed 10th on the stage.

Canadian Rob Britton was sitting in ninth before the stage but fell out of the top-10 to 11th 1:57 back from Alaphilippe with two stages to go.

The women are racing the Tour of California as a four stage WorldTour race. Stage 2 was held in Folsom and featured a 20-km team time trial. With some of the best squads in the world lining up it was sure to be a competitive race. Twenty16 presented by Sho-Air powered their way to victory 6-seconds ahead of the team of the race leader Megan Guarnier, Boels-Dolmans.  UnitedHealthcare rounded out the podium.
