Cinelli to auction off Laser Nostra prototype for (RED)

LaserRED

Cinelli has contributed a prototype Laser Nostra fixed-gear limited-edition bicycle to Sir Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson’s (RED) design and innovation auction. The two organizers have teamed up with musician Bono to put on the auction that will focus on the most impressive examples of design and innovation.

The Cinelli (RED) Prototype to be auctioned is signed by the company’s president and designer, Antonio Colombo, and is the same bike on which Neil Bezdek won the 2011 Red Hook Criterium in Milan.

The team that designed the cycle included Colombo, and a group of physiologists, engineers, coaches and riders. This model was released in 2011 as an anniversary edition.

“It’s been a thrilling journey for Jony and me to curate this collection of pieces that celebrate extraordinary design that we love, that transcends all boundaries of time and place. Each object and the process of creating it conveys a rich set of human values, so it seems fitting that they should be auctioned with a different sense of human value in mind, to raise as much as possible to help people’s lives today,” said Marc Newson in a press release.

The bike is expected to be auctioned for between US$15,000 and US$20,000.

The (RED) program was founded in 2006 by Bono and Bobby Shriver to combat the spread of AIDS with the help of the private sector. Some of the largest companies in the world, such as Apple and Starbucks, sell (RED) program products with proceeds going toward the program.

Other items to be auctioned include are a Russian cosmonaut suit that was actually worn in space, a pair of solid-gold Apple earbuds, and a Stormtrooper helmet from the Star Wars movies, amongst others.

The proceeds from the auction will go to the program to help fight AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. The auction will be held on Nov. 23.
