The Bold New Cycling Goals You Should Set For 2024

Why you should stop doing the same thing you've been doing (or swearing you're going to do) year after year

If the New Year’s resolutions you set always seem to look a lot like the previous year’s resolutions (and the year before that, and the year before that), it might be time for a bold pivot. Even if you feel as if you make incremental progress every year, you should still change things up. Your old goals might be holding you back from reaching your full potential.

“This year, I’ll win the local series again.”

“In 2024, I’m going to race the same races I raced in 2023, but better.”

“This is the year I lose 5 lb. and boost my power-to-weight ratio.”

“By Dec. 31, I’ll have won that national championship.”

Switching to new goals is scary, though. There’s a comfort in recycling ambitions and simply changing the year at the top of your resolutions list. If you have made improvements to a metric, such as boosting your FTP or bettering the finishing time in a certain race, it’s tempting to see if you can get just a little better in the next 12 months. But at the same time, sticking to the same goal—whether you achieve it or not—can get incredibly stale.
