Bikes of Flanders: Boonen & Pozzato’s rides

We take a closer look at the bikes of the Winner and 1st Runner Up.

Tom Boonen and Filipo Pozzato had a lot in common headed into this year’s Tour of Flanders.  Both have won Monuments in the past, Flanders and Roubaix for Boonen, Milan San Remo for Pozzato. Both had something to prove at Flanders.

After missing out on Flanders and Roubaix for a few years, Tornado Tom had a storming spring, winning from Qatar all the way to E3 Harelbeke and Gent Wevelgem.  For Boonen however, his season’s success or failure will always be measured by Flanders and Roubaix.

Pozzato had even more to prove.  After a lacklustre few years, Pozzato dropped down to the 2nd division Italian Pro-Continental squad Farnese-Vini.  After vowing to return to the top after a hard winter’s training, an untimely crash at the 5th stage of Qatar look to put paid to Pozzato’s plans.  A determine (or desparate) returned to riding only 9 days after his crash, instead of Doctor’s recommended 40. A 6th place at Milan San Remo showed Pozzato was coming good at just the right time.

The two riders will have a chance at a rematch next Sunday, at Paris – Roubaix.
