Sea Otter News: Shimano launches 10-speed MTB Groups
Shimano announces new 3x10 XT, SLX-level and non-series drivetrains.
The big news from the opening day of the 20th Sea Otter Classic event in Monterey was the announcement by Shimano of Dyna-Sys, a new 10-speed mountain bike drivetrain. While SRAM unveiled a 2×10 high-end cross country racing drivetrain late last year, Shimano chose to launch its 10-speed mountain bike system in it’s lower-end groupsets.
There has been no mention (yet) of a 2×10 or 3×10 XTR racing drivetrain, but our guess is that’s fairly soon to come.
However, this latest announcement is certainly interesting and a big step forward for Shimano.
The Dyna-Sys drivetrain technology is being launched for the XT, SLX and its non-series drivetrains, and all are being called an addition to the 9-speed drivetrains, rather than out and out replacements. Shimano says the new drivetrain offers closer gear ratios for smoother shifting performance and better power transfer and a more stable drivetrain.
Where the standard 9-speed groupsets used a 44-33-22 chain ring setup, the 10-speed system will have 42-32-24 rings.
