2011 Buyer’s Guide: MTB Gear: Saddles

Most mountain bikers prefer saddles with a bit of durability.

While ultralight minimalist saddles are popular with the road racing crowd, most mountain bikers prefer saddles with a bit more durability. Sure, mountain bike saddles should be light, but they should also be capable of surviving the impacts encountered during the typical trail ride. Here are three good options that are lightweight and durable.

Specialized
22058
Henge Expert – $130

Using Specialized’s Body Geometry construction, the Henge Expert delivers off-road comfort and soft tissue protection. A carbon-reinforced shell provides controlled flex over uneven terrain while the medium-density EVA padding minimizes pressure points. Hollow titanium rails minimize weight and the synthetic cover and flush mounted scuff-guards resist trail induced wear. Ideal for XC or all-mountain riding.

Selle Italia
22059
SLR XC – $220

With its durable Lorica cover and Kevlar-reinforced fabric edges, the SLR XC is ready for any off-road ride. Tubular Vanox rails help keep the saddle weight at 160 g without sacrificing strength, while the firm 30 per cent carbon fibre-content shell provides just enough flex for comfort on long rides. A good choice for cross-country racing.

Fizik
22138
Tundra 2 K:ium – $194

Thanks to the Tundra’s long, flat profile, riders can easily shift their position for optimum weight distribution and power. The saddle’s long 85 mm alloy rails ensure a perfect set-up on almost any bike and carbon-reinforced shell delivers controlled flex for comfort on the trails. Fizik includes an integrated clip for mounting Fizik accessories and covers the shell with durable top grain leather. All these features and performance come in at very reasonable 190 g. Perfect for racing or long trail rides.
